Beelitzer Spargel

It's the season of the asparagus: In the surroundings of Berlin, especially in Beelitz, up until the midth of June grows the world-famous "Beelitzer Spargel", which is white with a sweet taste. It is so delicious, that each and every year we can't wait to eat it.

Restaurants all over the city offer special menues based on asparagus, wonderful soup of asparagus, asparagus with egg, with "Schnitzel", with ham etc.

To be honest, this asparagus is worthwile to come to Berlin. Beside: It has no calories and no carbohydrates.

Topography of Terror - new museum building

Just two weeks ago, the new museum and exhibition of the Topography of Terror has been opened by the German president Horst Köhler. The director of this exhibit is our Rabbi Prof. Dr. Andreas Nachama.

The exhibit is now hosted in a museum building, which also has rooms for seminars and discussions. A small cafeteria allows to recreate from what you might see during the visit there.

The area of the Topography of Terror hosted in Nazi-times the headquarters of the German secret police (Gestapo) under Himmler, and the Reichssicherheitshauptamt, the headquarter of the SS under Heydrich. The museum concentrates on the perpetrators, and therefore, as our rabbi says, it is natural for the german government, to let it be managed by a jewish person: "Germans have to concentrate to the victims, only a Jewish person could be trusted to manage an exhibition about the perpetrators.", he explained to us.

Martin-Gropius-Bau shows Olafur Eliasson

martin-gropius-bau

As mentioned before in one of our newsletters, some new exhibitons at Martin-Gropius-Bau-Museum near the Topographie of Terror have been opened with great success:

Olafur Eliasson did a great job with his Exhibition "Innen Stadt Außen" which can be visited until August 9, 2010.

For instance you walk in a room full of artificial fog which is enlightened by coloured lights. A very special experience. In the inner hall of the museum he installed hundreds of mirrors so you expect going through some space tunnel. Very interesting works of him - people are lining up to get into the exhibition!

Frida Kahlo Exhibition at Martin-Gropius-Bau

Also up until August 9, 2010 a Retrospective of Frida Kahlo's work is shown in the Martin-Gropius-Bau.

It consists of about 150 works, paintings and drawings, from Frida Kahlo. In this amount, her work has never shown before.

We highly recommend to buy online or VIP-tickets with a time frame for instant access. They entitle you to use a special entrance without lining up.

Carnival of Cultures

Like every year, the carnival of cultures-festival takes place on the coming weekend: The big parade will happen at May 23, 2010 in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The richness of Berlin's ethnic diversity will be shown again by more than 100 groups with over 4.500 people parading down the streets, celebrating with at least 500.000 Berliners watching them.

Synagogue at Rykestrasse

Unfortunately, the beautiful reconstructed synagogue at Rykestrasse in Prenzlauer Berg is not open anymore to the public. Due to financial shortages the Centrum Judaicum is not able to give access for public viewings like they did before on two days a week.

If you want to visit this most beautiful tempel in Berlin, you have to do it - with respect - joining a service.

This was all for today. Wishing you all the best for a happy Schawuot we say
