Sue Arns (former Sue Blumenthal)

Dear friends,

Shana Tova – may you have a sweet, healthy and happy new year 5772.

About our privat life

We had quite a busy season – in the meantime, about 90% of our customers come by word of mouth, meaning to say we are busier every year. Now the quiet season is coming closer (November – April) and we thought it is time to let you know what is going on in Berlin.

Aaron (Eckart) had to have surgery twice on his bladder due to benign, non-dispersing tumors and the next surgery will be at the end of October. He has been doing fine and we luckilly could and can continue touring together.

We lost 2 more of our cats, Micky in February of a severe heart-disease, he was only 7.

We lost Sophie of a severe tyroid- and kidney-disease on September 13, she was 13.

Now we have left only 2 pets, a kitten, Lilly-Flo, and our Jack-Russell Gina.

Kosher milchig cafe-restaurant "Bleibergs"

When it comes to kosher food, this cafe is my favourite one. Owned by Manuela Hoffmann and her husband Michael, it is near the Kurfürstendamm and not far from the big department store KaDeWe and strictly keeps the kosher rules under the supervision of the Berlin Rabbinat.

Manuela Hoffmann at Bleibergs

For us a place to buy our Challa, some of our favourite bread and from time to time our Hamantaschen. A place to meet other Jews, locals and tourists.

From time to time the Bleibergs offers little events such a live music.

Berlin-Blues

This is why we love Berlin so very much – seen in front of the big department store KaDeWe just at the entrance of the subway station Wittenbergplatz (under reconstruction).

Pergamon-Museum at Museum Island

The Pergamon-Museum has been and will continue being the museum #1 in Berlin – watch the little movie under this link

Also, starting today until September 30, 2012, the museum shows a 360° panorama of Pergamon.

Tickets for the whole Pergamon-Museum to be sold at 18,- Euros/person, time-frames and reservations are necessary in order to avoid long queues. Ask your concierge to make the necessary reservations for you.

This museum is an absolute must when visiting Berlin. External link to the exhibiton-website

Neues Museum with Nefertiti at Museum Island

Get a virtual tour of the architecture here museum - time frames are still required in order to avoid the lines. The star of the exhibit is Nefertiti and the wonderful architecture by David Chipperfield.

An absolute must for friends of architecture and Egyptian history. The rest of the exhibit is a bit of a "Mishmash".

Bode-Museum at Museum Island

Until November 20, 2011, this Exhibit "Renaissance Faces" presents 150 major works of Italian portraiture by more than 40 masters of the early Renaissance.

Difficult to get tickets, contact your concierge as early as you can to get you VIP-Tickets.

Reichstag

Since December 2010 and for general safety, it is no longer possible to line up to get into the Reichstag.

A reservation in the restaurant "Käfer" is the easiest way to get a permission to get into the Reichstag. However, no tour of the building is included, only a short trip with the elevator up to the terrace from where you will be able to look at Berlin from up above the building. A free audioguide is available to start your tour up the walkable dome. Once you have a reservation (the concierge needs your full names and dates of birth) you will have to carry your passports in order to be allowed to enter the building.

Ort der Information (Holocaust Museum) under the big memorial by Peter Eisenman

This museum is an absolute must when visiting Berlin. No entrance fee – closed on Mondays. Please notice that this is NOT the Jewish Museum.

Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind

A museum dedicated not to the Shoah but to Jewish life, suffering, opression and humiliation of Jewish people throughout the centuries on German territory.

Why did Jews become money-lenders and traders? Most of us Jews know it, not so the many gentile visitors from all over the world who come to visit the Jewish museum.

A must on your list of to-do's in Berlin. Open daily, also on Shabbat, except on Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur (Oct. 8, 2011).

Flashmob at Berlin Hauptbahnhof with Vladimir Malakov and "Oz – The wonderful Wizard" on March 3, 2011

Those wonderful things happen in Berlin, mostly when nobody expects it in the middle of the day at our main train station External link to Youtube-Video
