Sue Arns (former Sue Blumenthal)

Dear friends,

I know we are late but - after Rosh Hashannah and wishing you a happy and healthy 5772 we also want to say a "Shana Tova 2012" - may you live long, healthy, happy and forever.

About our privat life

There are so many things that we have to tell you – I will keep it short:

No more tumors were found during the last surgery on Aarons bladder, he came home healthy, happy and we are living and thanking G*d for a second chance in our life.

6 weeks ago on Dec. 20 I had to undergo surgery for my left hand side shoulder, I am recovering and doing quite well. I had a tendon-rupture, an impingement and they had to remove my bursa due to a heavy bursitis.

One of my ancestors in New York from May 5 – July 31, 2012

We found more family of mine. They are not alive anymore but at least I do have a story, which my mum did not tell me before she died when I was 12.

Gertrud Aronhold, a sister of my grandpa, married Lucian Bernhard who was the first professor of graphic arts in Germany. One of his famous works is the Bosh advertisement:

An exhibit of my ancestor Lucian Bernhard is now coming to New York. Click here and I am sure that many of his works are familiar to you – I was certainly amazed how many of the famous posters are designed by him.

By the way: His daughter (a cousin of my mum) was Ruth Bernhard, a very famous photgrapher, who died at the age of 101 in San Francisco in 2006, 6 years ago. Her work was about children, still life and starting in the 1960s, women's nudes. She donated her work to the Princeton University Art Museum.

Airport Berlin (BER) starts on June 3, 2012

The new airport starts on the southern outskirts of Berlin with a capacity of 27 million passengers per year and the possibilty to expand to 45 million passengers. Airport Tegel will be closed, as well as Tempelhof has been closed a few years ago.

Please keep in mind that there will be only this new airport and the transfer into the city will take a bit longer than from Tegel airport. A cab ride might cost about 50 Euros. Also private transfers supplied by your hotel, travel agent or by us will be more costly due to the much longer distance.

And the good news for our clients from California: There will be a direct flight connection from LA to Berlin starting in May 2012!

Commemoration on October 18, 2011

On October 18, 1941 – before the Wannsee conference, transports started to the ghettos with thousands and thousands of Jews on board of cattle cars. Among the victims of this very first transport was one of my grandfather's sister Gertrud Aronhold, the wife of Lucian Bernhard (a photo with their dog, about 1906):

It was the 70th anniversary and therefore the government of Berlin had a commemoration ceremony. Berliners were requested to bring white roses or white flowers. I was overwhelmed when I was there with my clients, overwhelmed about how many Berliners joined the commemoration and how many flowers were there for the next days. Here are two pictures, I had to take them in between the tour I was giving, therefore they are not the best quality.

Wall of names built by children

Remember the school I took you to? The children building a wall with names of murdered Jewish citizens? The 941 children who throughout the years have layed down a brick and in their name the director of the school, Christa Niclasen, received the Obermayer-Award. It is the German Jewish History Award 2012.

We were invited to the event, but due to illness we could not assist, the event took place at the Parliament of Berlin.

Radio Broadcast – Sue Arns, a Tour Guide and the Shoah

Here is a link for those who understand either Jiddish or German. A wonderful perspective of my life and our jewish tours in Berlin which was broadcasted in the German radio on Dec. 28, 2011 by Birgit Galle.

A wonderful Jewish movie "Oma and Bella" by Alexa Karolinski

Here is the link – the young lady in the meantime got the necessary funds to produce the movie, which will be presented at the Berlinale Film Festival starting next week in Berlin.

I can't get enough from watching this preview – it is just wonderful. Give it a click and just look at it and please focus on the very "Jewish food" the ladies prepared.

Oma and Bella is an intimate portrait of two Holocaust survivors who stayed in Germany. The film was made by Oma's granddaughter.

This was all for today. We send you our best wishes.

B'Shalom

We hope to see you soon in our beautiful city!
