Dear friends:

here are the latest news from Berlin and us:

About our privat life

Not long ago I went to a new doctor. When talking to her I started gazing at her necklace with a very large Magen David.

No, she was not Jewish, but she explained to me that she weares this necklace as a symbol of solidarity with all Jewish people. And that she feels endlessy sad about what happened to the Jews in Germany.

I was very moved about that and wanted to share this with you.

New Airport Berlin "Willy Brandt" - opening belated

The new Berlin airport will not open as planned on June 3, but "later". At this very point nobody will be able to give a precise date. So plan on still arriving in Tegel, which is about a 20 minutes drive to the hotels and pretty much downtown.

Israel-Party in Berlin, May 14, 2012

To commemorate the independence of Israel, we had a public party in Berlin yesterday, May 14, at Wittenbergplatz, right beside the big department store KaDeWe. This is, besides the official ceremonies and parties held, a party meant for everybody in Berlin, Jews and Non-Jews. We of course joined the party and here are a few fotos:

Some of you might remember him from the Otto-Weidt-Museum (the little brush-factory): Mr. Chaim Hoffmann, German Champion in his beard-wearing-category of 2012, at his Falafel-Stand:

Reading of names 2012

Since a couple of years and usually on Yom HaShoah and mostly in front of the JCC, we Berliner Jews and some Gentiles have started reading the names of the 55.696 Jews who werde deported out of Berlin and murdered.

Victims like my grandfather who escaped to other cities and were deported from there are not read.

However, this year the reading was stopped at the names starting with "Po…" due to the fact that is was Shabbat. We were very disappointed.

This is only one of the unpleasant and embarrassing incidents our local Jewish community is experiencing due to the new JCC chairmans-board in our city.

Kabbalat-Shabbat-Dinner at TheKosherClassroom

Due to a cold we caught we had to postpone our visit of the Kabbalat-Shabbat-Dinner at TheKosherClassrooom on March 30 and instead joined the dinner on May 4. So here is our review of that event:

All guests sit along two long tables, like on a family dinner. The Maschgiach of TheKosherClassroom, Leon Golzman, gives a short explanation on Shabbat and the rithus. He does this in German, but you can ask him for English explanations as well, which he will give you afterwards. Dinner starts after the ritual hand-washing. Because of the familiar atmosphere we immediately got into conversation with the other people sitting next to us, the guests were a mixture of Jews and Non-Jews. We were surprised how many Germans were anxious to learn about Judaism.

The young couple next to us was from the former East German city of Magdeburg, very well behaved and educated and quite interested in everything Jewish, travelling to Israel next month. On the other side we had a couple from Denmark, we did not find out if they were Jewish or not, but we did not really care about that. They seated us in front of each other so we really came into conversation with everybody around us.

The menu consists of four courses. Like in a family everybody helps to serve the others. The servings are on large dishes. You may ask for vegetarian dishes as well.

It was a wonderful experience, for those who want to combine both: A nice dinner with a short Kabbalat-Shabbat ceremony away from home.

This was all for today. We send you our best wishes.

Shalom

We hope to see you soon in our beautiful city!
