Dear friends,

we hope you had a nice Passover? This year we celebrated our Seder at home. In Berlin winter-time is over and we've started into our high-season. We look forward to meeting you and/or your friends coming to Berlin!

Berlin starts showing it's nicest face by blooming everywhere. Spring has come, winter has definetely gone, Berlin is full of flowers - and we enjoy our beautiful city!

Michael Blumenthal will become an Honorary Citizen of Berlin

The former Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin, W. Michael Blumenthal, will become an Honorary Citizen of Berlin. On April 24, 2015 at 10.30 h he will be honored by our governing mayor Michael Müller and the president of the Berlin parliament Ralf Wieland in the Berlin Cityhall.

He will become the 118th Honorary Citizen of Berlin. The last honored person was in 2014 the german president Joachim Gauck, Heinz Berggruenhas been the 114th.

As an Honorary Citizen of Berlin he will receive

- a picture shown at the gallery of the honorary citizens
- an honorary grave which will be maintained forever by the city of Berlin
- and much more like free transportation in public transportation all around Berlin for the rest of his life...

Michael Blumenthal was born in 1926 in Oranienburg near Berlin. He fled Germany in 1939 to Shanghai and in 1947 moved to the USA. From 1977 to 1979 he was the US Secretary of Treasury under President Carter. From 1977 to 2014 he was the Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin. Thank you, Mr. Blumenthal!

At 6 prominent locations in Berlin (Brandenburg-Gate, Lustgarten, Joachimsthaler Platz, Alexanderplatz, Wittenbergplatz and Potsdamer Platz) an open-air exhibition about destroyed Berlin and the Berliners post-war days and everyday life between war and peace in 1945 is shown.

New flight-connection between Berlin and Prague

Air Berlin now offers a direct flight from Berlin to Prague and vice versa. The duration is about 1 hour. Travellers from Prague to Berlin or viceversa can consider this flight instead of using the slow train-connection (app. 5 hrs.) or driving by chauffeur-service (app. 3.5 hrs). You might have a look at the flight schedule for April and other months here.

 

 

Premiere of "Moses and Aaron" from Schönberg at Komische Oper

Barry Kosky, the Jewish director of the Komische Oper Berlin, one of our three opera houses, premieres an opera created by Arnold Schönberg in the beginning 1930ies: "Moses and Aaron"

This production marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz!

 

 

Hollywood-Productions and Berlin: Game of Thrones and Homeland

If you are a fan of these two great american TV-Serials, it might be of interest that

  • there will be an exhibition for Game of Thrones in Berlin (May 13 - 17) and
  • the next season 5 of Homeland will be shot these days at locations in Berlin and at Studio Babelsberg. So you might run into Carrie during your stay!

 

 

Late Breaking News: The AppleWatch available tomorrow at The Corner Berlin!

If you are waiting for your new AppleWatch - there might be a possibility to get it earlier in Berlin: At The Corner Berlin (at Gendarmenmarkt) those gadgets are available starting April 24, 10 a.m. - but it is not clear if they have also the AppleWatch Edition (the gold one).
