Sue Arns (former Sue Blumenthal)

Dear friends,

this year we thought winter would not touch us: Until late december the flowers on our balcony were still blooming. But now the cold has come and brought an end to this wonderful warm year 2015. By the way: A little bit late, but we wish you and your family a wonderful and healthy 2016.

Our agenda is filling up and we are happy that tourism is increasing in Berlin.

Sue in winter - snow!
Eventually winter got us!

About our private life

Aaron had to undergo hernia surgery this winter. Everything went smooth since he was treated by one of the best surgeons in the country. He quickly recovered and is now at 100% again.

Miracles happen! 2 days ago we got an unexpected phone call from France: We were found by not known relatives of Sue! Wow!

Sue's grandmother Margarete Aronhold had an older sister Irma Abarbanell ( from Prague), who lived in Berlin right beside Sue's grandparents building - and the relatives are her descendants.

Building at Knesebeckstr. 32
Irma lived in this beautiful building - besides you see trees where the building of Sue's grandparents once stood

Just a few days ago we welcomed in Berlin the wonderful young lady from Prague who helped us so much in finding Sue's ancestry in Prague. Of course we visited with her the stumbling-stones dedicated to Sue's family right in front of those trees where Sue's mother and grandparents once lived:

Lucia and Sue in front of the stumbling-stones
We all cried! Thank you so very much, Lucia!

Remembrance on 27th of January

On January 27 for the German government is Holocaust-Remembrance-Day in Germany. This is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. We remember all those people who were murdered and suffered in those years of horror! As long as we have them, a survivor is invited to talk in front of the German Bundestag in the building Reichstag. This year there was a simultaneous translation into English.

Ruth Klüger, survivor from different camps, held a touching speech in front of the german parlament today. At the age of 12, arriving at the ramp of Auschwitz she lied about her age and pretended to be 15. This way she was not sent into the gas but to do slavework. And she survived. It was a hint an older prisoner gave her just 2 minutes before the soldier separating people asked her. We shall never forget!

American TV-Serials in Berlin

After Homeland the next US TV-serial is recorded in Berlin: Berlin Station. We are excited and very curious to see how Berlin is presented this time.

A word at Homeland: Too much fantasy is in this serial. Slums like shown in Homeland don't exist here, the evacuated airport BER is not even working (opening maybe 2018?).

Life in Berlin is so much better, life is safe here. Good story, but not a glance of realism. Luckily!

Art from the Holocaust

Until April 3, 2016 the German History Museum exhibits Art that was painted by Jewish inmates in concentration camps. Very moving: 24 of the 50 exhibited artists have been murdered in the camps. This exhibition is done in collaboration with Yad Vashem and usually this art never travels.

Online-Exhibitions from the Jewish Museum Berlin now available

The Jewish Museum Berlin wants to show its temporary special exhibitions to the public, even after they are finished. So they started a brand new website with first five exhibitions:

• Jewish Women ceramicists from Germany after 1933

• "May he rot forever!"

• "... until we meet again, safe and sound"

• "Does anybody have information...?"

• "Mazel tov!"

Why do we feel so good in Berlin? Well, it is safe, relaxed - and... We agree with what the Washington Post wrote recently in this article.

...hope to see you soon in wonderful Berlin! And maybe Potsdam, too?
