Dear friends, sorry for such a late newsletter but we have been touring almost 7 days a week this summer. Berlin is beautiful and green as always at this time of the year and full of life and many events going on. Berlin has the best weather in all of Germany and we are enjoying it.
About our private life Today Sue and I face a very special anniversary: Twelve years ago we had our first date (6 weeks afterwards we got married). And the best is: Our marriage survived working together for now 10 years!
Special exhibitions in Berlin's museums We have some very special exhibits in our museums, f.i. about William Kentridge (-> August 21), The Mayas - Language of Beauty (-> August 7) and Berenice Abbott (-> October 3) in Martin-Gropius-Bau.
Emil Nolde's paintings are shown until October 23 at Brücke-Museum in Berlin-Dahlem.
There is a special exhibit about the Jewish painter Max Liebermann gets a special exhibit called "Biergärten und Caféterassen" (Beergardens and Terrace Cafés) at his former summer-house at Berlin Wannsee until September 12.
If you like old masters, have a look at "El siglo de oro - The age of Velázquez" at Gemäldegalerie about paintings from Velázquez, El Greco, Francesco de Zubarán and many more (-> October 30).
Art-Biennale This year the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art is spread throughout the summer all over Berlin:
Commemoration in our neighbourhood A few weeks ago our neighbours sponsored stumbling-stones for jewish victims in front of their building. We were invited, but had to work that day. Afterwards I could make a picture of the new stones and the flowers - we learned that surviving relatives participated and that it was a very moving ceremony!
Barenboim-Said-Academy opens soon We'll get a new Frank Gehry building: The new Barenboim-Said-Academy will have a concert-hall built by this famous architect, and its name will be Pierre-Boulez-Hall. The first concert will be next year, but its first students start this October. This project is a wonderful idea of coexistenz! The first managing director of this academy will be Michael Naumann (Jewish), former German secretary of culture; he is the responsible for the museum underneath the "Memorial for the murdered Jews in Europe". Website of the Pierre-Boulez-Hall See you soon in our wonderful city!
